Aaand, SockTart! By Maire at Inkyblack.net, SockTart is another knitting podcast, produced in the same city that I live in! And if you’re a Firefly fan, please make sure to listen to the song at the end of episode 8!
THE KNITATOR!!
I work in theatre (standard plays, and opera), and maybe that is why I feel so strongly about this issues. Please, please do not knit when you are attending live theatre. We can see you. The actors can see you. They are acting (or singing) their little hearts out for YOU because YOU are in their ‘house’, and the least you can do is devote yourself for a couple hours. Plus knitting, or otherwise being busy with my hands, keeps me centered in this world, when the point of the theatre is to get lost in the world on stage.
If you want some free opera on a Saturday, check out CBC Radio 2’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera.
Etsy Revue
- I joined (for 4 months) the Hobbledehoy Batt Club. The batts are yummy, full of great fibres and colours, and aren’t yarn, so I’m allowed to buy them.
Knitteth Thou?
Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream premiered in 1960. (In a funny unwonted theme for this podcast episode, many think that Britten was parodying the whole genre of opera in this work).
From A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act 1, Scene 1 of the play, and Act 1, Scene 4 of the opera.
In the play this speech is given to Hermia, while in Britten’s opera, it turns into a duet between Lysander (tenor) and Hermia (mezzo-soprano).
My good Lysander!
I swear to thee, by Cupid’s strongest bow,
By his best arrow with the golden head,
By the simplicity of Venus’ doves,
By that which knitteth souls and prospers loves,
And by that fire which burn’d the Carthage queen,
When the false Troyan under sail was seen,
By all the vows that ever men have broke,
In number more than ever women spoke…
Music:
First, I ramble a bit about my love of Weird Al Yankovic (and parody songs in general), and then I get on with the music.
Today’s music is Hey, It’s Can(non) by Tom Smith, whose ‘Free Stuff’ page can be found here. (Make sure to listen to I’m On Firefly as well!)
As always the theme music is Greensleeves by Lee Harris and the Tijuana Trumpets, and is from the Podsafe Music Network.
PS: Don’t forget about Talk Like a Pirate Day, on September 19th!
